How do I stop slugs/snails from coming up out of heat duct work/registers and slimeing up the walls and floor.?

What a gross problem -- in the spring and summer, I find slime trails from slugs or snails going up my walls! The critters come up out of the floor heat registers, and the slime won't come off. Any tips on getting rid of the slugs or cleaning up after the slime?
