That's a very interesting essay topic! You could think of it going from Gothic - Victorian futurist (Wells, Verne, etc.) - 'Golden Age' Space Opera (20s-40s) - the branching into behaviorist, techno, social-parable, etc. in the late 50s+. Picking supoprting examples might be the toughest part!
